For those of us who spend our holidays stateside soaking up the culture (and the calories), finding an authentic "taste of America" back home in the UK can be a challenge. Most places offer a "British interpretation," but I’m always on the hunt for the real deal.
After watching a video by American vlogger Kalani Ghost Hunter, I discovered that a slice of the Deep South had landed in Manchester. I headed straight to Cardinal Rule to see if it lived up to the hype.
Cardinal Rule is the resident kitchen currently based at Northern Monk Refectory, and it’s the real McCoy. It’s run by an American couple from Virginia, so you know the recipes aren't being "translated" for a British palate—they are exactly as you’d find them across the pond.
Take note: if you’re after that classic breakfast feel, you have to visit on a weekend. While their chicken biscuits are famous, the biscuits and gravy are a weekend-only exclusive.
The Verdict: Two Classics, Zero Regrets I’m a massive fan of American breakfast culture, so I couldn't pick just one. I ordered both:
Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit: This took me straight back to my morning stops at Chick-fil-A. The biscuit was perfectly flaky—not a "scone" in sight!
Biscuits with Sausage Gravy Benedict: This was the absolute standout. As a frequent traveler to the States, I can confirm the gravy is a dead ringer for the legendary version at Cracker Barrel. It hit the nail on the head in terms of seasoning and heartiness.
Cardinal Rule is a must-visit for any fan of American food. It’s the closest I’ve come to a genuine Southern breakfast without needing a passport. My only hope is that this Virginia-led team opens more permanent spots soon—the UK needs more of this level of authenticity!
